Course Description
The Geometry course includes an in-depth analysis of plane, solid, and coordinate geometry as they relate to both abstract mathematical concepts as well as real-world problem situations. Topics include logic and proof, parallel lines and polygons, perimeter and area analysis, volume and surface area analysis, similarity and congruence, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. Emphasis will be placed on developing critical thinking skills as they relate to logical reasoning and argument.
Course Includes
- 40+ hours of engaging instructional video
- 71 video lessons
- 71 practice worksheets
- 71 worksheet review videos where I go over each of the exercises
- 71 Knowledge Check quizzes
- 12 section exams
- Solution guides to all Section Exams
- Solution guides to all Knowledge Check quizzes
- Solution guides for all practice worksheet
Course Goals
Upon successful completion of this class, students will be able to:
- Use and prove basic theorems involving congruence and similarity of figures
- Determine how changes in dimensions affect perimeter and area of common geometric figures
- Apply and use the properties of proportion
- Prove the Pythagorean theorem
- Use the Pythagorean theorem to determine distance and find missing dimensions of right triangles
- Know and use formulas for perimeter, circumference, area, volume, lateral and surface area of common figures
- Find and use measures of sides, interior and exterior angles of polygons to solve problems
- Use relationships between angles in polygons, complementary, supplementary, vertical and exterior angle properties
- Use special angle and side relationships in special right triangles
- Understand, apply, and solve problems using basic trigonometric functions
- Prove and use relationships in circles to solve problems
- Prove and use theorems involving properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal, quadrilaterals and circles
- Write geometric proofs
- Construct and judge validity of logical arguments
- Prove theorems using coordinate geometry including the midpoint of a segment and distance formula
- Understand transformations in the coordinate plane
- Construct logical verifications to test conjectures and counterexamples
- Write basic mathematical arguments statement-reason form
Course Requirements
Students taking this course are expected to have mastered the most important topics taught in an Algebra 1 course. Important topics to master are:
- Application of the Order of Operations
- Solving Linear Equations
- Solving Quadratic Equations
- Factoring Quadratic Polynomials
- Plotting points and graphs in the Cartesian Plane
Target Audience
This video course is primarily intended for students who have already mastered Algebra 1 concepts. This course can be taken before or after Algebra 2. Students generally take this course in their sophomore year of high school but could take it as early as 8th grade.
Technology
Students will need a calculator capable of performing the basic operations, as well as square roots and trigonometric functions. A scientific calculator will be sufficient for this course.
